Secretary of State Betty Ireland cautions West Virginia voters about potentially misleading registration effort

West Virginia Secretary of State Betty Ireland is cautioning voters not to be misled by a mailing sent to thousands of West Virginians asking them to register to vote. These mailings could cause confusion because the deadline to register to vote in next Tuesday’s May 13th primary has already passed. "Women's Voices. Women Vote" (WVWV) said they sent the mailing to over 16,000 unmarried women in the Mountain State as part of a larger nationwide mailing designed to get women registered to vote.

Secretary Ireland encourages citizens to still register to vote so that they will be eligible for the fall General Election, but wants to make sure it is understood that, for any new registrations received after the April 22nd deadline, those voters will not be able to vote in the May 13th primary.

"I appreciate that Women’s Voices Women Vote is trying to help get West Virginia citizens registered to vote," stated Secretary Ireland. "But it is important to stress that while citizens can still register to vote for the November General Election, they will not be eligible to vote in the upcoming primary if they did not register before the April 22nd deadline."

Secretary of State Betty Ireland announces major upgrade to campaign finance reporting system

On Friday, Secretary of State Betty Ireland unveiled a major upgrade to the Secretary of State’s Campaign Finance Reporting System available at www.wvsos.com and www.WVvotes.com. Anyone interested in following contributions to statewide campaigns will now be able to search electronically for contributors by name or employer, among other search criteria. Adding this search feature will help voters easily determine who, in particular, is funding campaigns for any statewide office.

“I am pleased to offer this new feature to the ever improving and expanding Campaign Finance Reporting System,” Secretary Ireland said. “This upgrade will go a long way to ensuring transparency and accountability in elections, which have been top priorities for my office.”

West Virginia’s Primary is May 13th

(And for the first time, independents can vote in either primary.)

Secretary of State Betty Ireland would like to remind voters that West Virginia’s Primary Election will be held on May 13th, the second Tuesday in May, as required by state law. Voters will have the opportunity to cast their vote on a full slate of candidates, including presidential candidates, at that time.
