CalendarsCANDIDATE FILING PERIOD

  • January 14 - 26 midnight: Candidate filing period.
    Certificate of announcement accepted by filing offices:
    -- Secretary of State for all offices on ballot in more than one county.
    -- County Clerk for all offices on ballot in only one county.
  • January 26 : Last day to file in person at correct filing office. Secretary of State open until midnight. County Clerk's offices open at hours announced locally.
  • January 26 : Last day to mail complete filing; must bear U. S. postmark showing mailing before midnight. Do not use non-postal express delivery service.

CANDIDATE PERSONAL FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE FILING
  • January 14 - February 5 : Candidate must file personal financial disclosure with WV Ethics Commission within ten days after filing certificate of announcement.


INDEPENDENT OR MINOR PARTY CANDIDATE FILING DEADLINES

  • April 14: Deadline for minor party & independent candidates doing nominating petitions to file certificate of announcement and pay filing fee. (Except for President)
  • May 12 : Deadline for minor party and independent candidates doing nominating petitions to file petitions for nomination to appear on November 4, 2008 general election ballot. (see details).
  • May 13: PRIMARY ELECTION DAY
  • Aug 1: Deadline for minor party and independent candidates for President

WRITE-IN FILING DEADLINE FOR PRIMARY ELECTION

  • April 1 : Last day for filing of official write-in candidate for Board of Education to be received.

CANDIDATE WITHDRAWAL


DEADLINE TO WITHDRAW FROM BALLOT
  • February 12 : Last day for notarized statement of withdrawal from the ballot to be received by appropriate filing officer in order for candidate to have name removed from ballot.

DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR WITHDRAWAL FOR EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES
  • August 12: Last day for nominee to apply to State Election Commission for withdrawal due to extenuating circumstances.

DRAWING FOR BALLOT POSITION


UNIFORM DRAWING DATE FOR PRIMARY ELECTION
  • 9:00 a.m., February 19 : County Clerks in each county conduct drawing for ballot position for all offices in which more than one candidate has filed for nomination or election.

UNIFORM DRAWING DATE FOR GENERAL ELECTION
  • 9:00 a.m., August 26 : County Clerks in each county conduct drawing for ballot position for those offices in which more than one candidate will be elected.

SPECIAL FILING PERIOD FOR BOARD OF EDUCATION


FILING TO FILL VACANCY ON BOARD OF EDUCATION
  • August 4-19: Only in counties where vacancy on Board of Education occurred after January 14 and no later than August 19, candidate may file with County Clerk for Board of Education seat on ballot in General Election.
